POST #14: Mount Washington & Monroe

Vertical #SeacoastCancer5K Challenge (September 29-October 31, 2020) Update:

Saturday October 24, 2020. Cloudy with intermittent rain 0.5-1 inches. Temp 55-37F at Trailhead 25F at summits. Winds 15-25 mph along trail. Beyond tree line and summits – 45-50 mph with 70 mph gusts. Beautiful Ammonoosuc riverside hike up with innumerable cascades and waterfalls all along. Several river crossings. Beyond tree line visibility was less than 20 feet with wind gusts and rain. Boulder hopping most of the way. Below tree line on Jewell trail was a pleasant hike down. Had to wade through swollen Ammonoosuc river at the very end!

POST #13: Mount Hale

Sunday October 18, 2020. Sunny. Temp 30-51 F. Wind: 10-15mph. About 1 foot of snow on the trail. First snow hike of fall 2020! Great views of the northern Presidentials and Pemigewaset wilderness from trailhead to summit. No views from the top.

Thursday October 15, 2020. Sunny with winds 30-45 mph with gusts at 70 mph. Had to hunker down under large boulders several times along the ridge! My cell phone got blown away.

Sunday October 11, 2020. Sunny. Temp 22-43 F Wind 5-10 mph. Beautiful fall day. Wet trail after overnight rain. Steady up hill with scramble for the last 1/4 mile on icy rocks. Beautiful 360 view with fall colors in valleys all around.

Saturday October 10, 2020. Sunny. Temp 40-70 F. Wind W 15mph Gusts 32 mph. Beautiful trail up 19 mile brook trail with gushing cascades all along. Up Carter Ridge trail and right towards Mt. Height and onwards to Carter Dome. Fantastic views 360 from Mt. Hight. Back along Carter Dome trail towards South and Middle Cater along Moriah Carter Trail. Down along North Carter trail and south Imp trail to 19 mile brook trailhead.

Thursday October 10, 2020. Temp 34-45 F at trailhead. 25-27 F at summits. Wind 15-25 mph with 45-50 mph gusts. Mostly cloudy. Wet trail after overnight rain. 9AM start after rain stopped. Pinkham Notch via Lost pond trail and up Wildcat Ridge trail with gusty tailwind. Beautiful views of Pinkham Notch from ledges along the way. Great views of the Carter Moriah mountains from Wildcat. Finished down 19 Mile Brook trail with beautiful cascades all along with great fall color

POST #7:  Saturday October 3, 2020. Foggy & rain (drizzle) for the most part with sun coming out around noon (last quarter of my hike). 40-63F. Winds at 5-10mph. Dense fog for most of the hike kept my focus on the trail and its immediate surroundings. Rain the previous day and ongoing drizzle kept the air crispy and fresh. The oldest and continuously used trail in the US!

POST #6: Thursday October 1, 2020. Sunny Temp: 36-66F Winds 10-15 mph with 20-25 mph gusts. Beautiful fall day with crisp air following a rainy day. Just past peak fall colors on the trees but trail filled with colors! Great unlimited views into horizon 360.

POST #5: The Hancocks

Sunday September 27, 2020. Partly sunny. Most cloudy. 62-72F. Wind 5-10 mph with 25mph gusts. Awesome fall day. First 2-3 miles gradual gradient with several brook crossings. Steep climb for the final mile or so to N Peak. Great views of the valley from ledge. Beautiful fall colors at its finest. Up and down ridge hike to South Peak. Equally steep descent.

Saturday Sept 26, 2020. Sunny. Temp 53-73. Winds 5-10 mph. Beautiful fall day. First two miles or so was gentle trail along river. Moderate climb thereafter to ridge. Beautiful views from ledges and from fire tower at summit.

POST #3: Tripyramids

Thursday September 24, 2020. Weather 50-74F, Sunny. Winds 5-10 mph. Great start along the Sabbaday brook and Falls. Several river crossings. It was challenging at a few river crossings to pick up trail! Last mile up was a scramble climb up to the Tripyramid ridge. Some views from summit from ledges. Beautiful fall colors across the valleys in all directions.
